From here.
"Steady on, lad," Jack mutters, supporting Wellard as the two of them cross first the shore and then the floating pier to the Black Pearl.
They stop there, as Jack looks up the sea-ladder with a frown.
"Can you climb?"

Date: 2006-10-24 03:19 am (UTC)(Just, Mary thinks, darkly, where one would get bloodstains, if one was going to bash someone over the head.)
Nothing in the pockets holds her interest for long - she's looking more for weapons than for jewelry; she can't read the odd symbols, and money isn't much good to her. As far as she knows, Wellard doesn't have any, so it doesn't make sense that he should have been robbed for that.
The chest gets examined next, with one wary eye constantly on the glass. Finding Clues is all very well, but making sure that Wellard is all right has to take precedence.
It doesn't take her long to open it - and if it's so easily opened, there's clearly no reason that she shouldn't open it. Yes? However, all she finds is more jewelry, and the seashells (each of which is held carefully up to her ear to listen) and the beads, none of which look particularly helpful -
- but sealed papers, on the other hand . . . .
She's just reaching for them when the sand runs out, and she draws her hand back as if it's burned, straightening in order to run over to Wellard's bedside.
(She doesn't bother closing the chest. She's not going to lie about what she did.)

...This is Mary, however.

Date: 2006-10-24 03:40 am (UTC)Mary's voice isn't particularly loud - well, not louder than usual, anyways, although worry gives it a certain piercing edge.
Her hands are clasped once again behind her back. But she's prepared to poke or shake if necessary.
"Are you awake?"
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 03:53 am (UTC)"Why are you-... wait."
Ever just wake up, and it takes you a bit to realize
remember
where you are? Wellard sits up a bit, glancing around Jack's cabin, before looking back to Mary, questioningly and confused.

Date: 2006-10-24 04:04 am (UTC)"He said that if you did not wake up it meant that something was wrong. Not that something is not wrong," she adds, darkly, "but at least this means that it is less wrong."

Date: 2006-10-24 04:21 am (UTC)"Fell, or something. An accident- I don't recall what happened. But I should be alright, like he said."
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 04:24 am (UTC)"How do you know what he said was true? He said himself he is a liar.
"All I know is you were hurt, and he was there."

Date: 2006-10-24 04:30 am (UTC)At least it is supposed to sway, though it must be said he has gotten out of other hammocks with much more grace other times. And there is a chair nearby to grab ahold of until the floor stops moving.
"There are some things its alright to lie about, and some that are not- and Captain Sparrow wouldn't lie if it were something important. I trust him, Mary."
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 04:32 am (UTC)(She might have a difficult time providing it. Considering that she's half Wellard's size, at least. But hey - it's the thought that counts, right?)
"And you cannot walk still - but he was more worried about hiding than about making you well."
Mary does not bother to hide the indignation in her voice.

Date: 2006-10-24 04:46 am (UTC)... Though sitting in the chair seems like a nice idea, really.
"Sometimes you don't always need a doctor." Wellard bites his lip, and shrugs. "I've been hurt other times before, and didn't need one. I am not saying always-" Quick to forestall that argument-
"But sometimes." He manages a faint smile. "So I'll be alright."
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 04:47 am (UTC)"You always say that."
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 04:51 am (UTC)"Just an accident or something- people do remember, eventually."
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 04:59 am (UTC)"No," she points out, flatly. "You do not. You are dead."
Mary feels that this would be the sort of thing that it's hard to forget.
"You get into trouble and you do not ever stop and you keep on getting hurt and you do not do anything about it - and you cannot even remember now! So you do not know what happened - it could have been anything; how can you learn if you do not know? You should see a good doctor at least to know!"

Date: 2006-10-24 05:15 am (UTC)Wellard has come to know Mary quite well, in the year since they have met at Milliways. And in turn, she has come to know him well- better than most, in fact. She is one of the few that not only knows how he died, but the detailed circumstances how. And in the telling of that, Wellard has quite found that the more worried and scared Mary is-
The more she yells and gets angry.
So, there is nothing to really say to her argument- particularly since those are things he is starting to worry about as well-
Nothing to say, but just reach over and pull her into a hug.
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 05:21 am (UTC)(Yelling, in Mary's experience, does not usually lead to hugs. It is simply not a logical consequence.)
"You are only not trying to get out of saying that I am right," she mutters, into his shoulder.
She doesn't pull away, though - after all, there's still the highly worrying possibility that he can't in fact stand, without the support of the hug.

Date: 2006-10-24 05:32 am (UTC)"I certainly don't go looking for trouble. I do my best to careful. Alright? That's the best anyone can do. And I will certainly be seeing about what happened. I don't remember-" He bites his lip.
"But Jack was there, so he'll know something."

Date: 2006-10-24 05:54 am (UTC)"... why?"
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 05:58 am (UTC)"I told you. And he brought you here to hide and he knew Norryton needed a doctor and he would not explain any of it, only said I was not to worry."
The scorn in Mary's voice at this last comment expresses clearly just how little Captain Jack knows Mary, if he expects this to put her off.

Date: 2006-10-24 06:06 am (UTC)"He was hurt also- is he alright, now?" A deep breath, and he finally nods.
"Alright, he shouldn't have said that maybe, but he wasn't just trying to not upset you."
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 06:09 am (UTC)"And if he was trying not to upset me," Mary adds, sharply, "he ought not to have gotten you hurt."

Date: 2006-10-24 06:14 am (UTC)"And if he was there why did he not stop you falling?"
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 06:19 am (UTC)("Last one off the yard arm gets a flogging!")
"Because sometimes you cannot stop someone from falling. Even if it isn't too bad. And I would quite well imagine it would be easy to tell if someone has or not, if they were hurt."
no subject
Date: 2006-10-24 06:22 am (UTC)"I do not think even if you fell into Norrington," she mutters, "it would make him have a hole in his stomach."
