pirate_jack: (him precious pearl - looking up)

There's a yardarm on the Black Pearl that's too cracked to hold the weight of the sails. That's not good. It's not good at all, and it's been bothering him all winter.

(When he thinks too much about it, Jack notices an ache in his own shoulder -- as though he's got a long-unhealed wound to match that of his ship. That's interesting, that is, but there's not much he can do about it, so he doesn't think about it all that often.)

As soon as the weather warms enough that he's not going to freeze while exploring, Jack takes off into the forest, in search of a tall straight tree, seasoned and strong-- one that'll be a suitable replacement for the broken yard.

Of course, Jack Sparrow's a man of the sea. He wasn't expecting the forest to be quite this odd.

Or to be gone this long.

Not that he's entirely sure how long it's been, anyway.

Long enough, and too long. "Captain Jack Sparrow." There is a voice not a voice which echoes in his ears, "You have been within me for rather a long time."

"You are fond of my youngest sister." The pale man-shaped being asserts, "I am Dream."

"We are all older than time. I do not think that Delirium will mind." Sometimes Dream is helpful. Usually it's by accident, when he tries to be helpful he just gets more confusing and cryptic.

"I understand." there is a faint hint of something not exactly a smile, but not exactly not a smile either, "She is quite capable of taking care of herself."

This means that even if Jack did disrespect her, Dream wouldn't touch him. Del would.

"This is me." He says mildly, "You walk within the Forest of the Dreaming, I am Dream. You stand with both feet in my Realm, and I am the personification of this place. You have been walking for more than a month, Captain. I believe this tree is suitable?"

The Endless steps away from the tree he had been leaning on, tall and straight as the horizon with few branches to trim.

On the other side of the tree, not that far at all, is the lake with the Pearl bobbing on it gently. Dream says, mildly, "You are welcome. It is a thing I am pleased to do for a friend of any of my sisters."

"It did not." Dream allows, "I am able to organize the Dreaming as I wish. I moved the tree and you. There are seven. Destiny, Death, me, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Del."

"It is polite," he mentions gently, "to allow you to speak it if you would rather and to pretend that I do not if you would rather I not."

"Endless." Dream may, possibly, in some manner, be teasing. Perhaps. "The definition of business as pertains to what I am is nebulous. I err on the side of caution."

"No, Captain Sparrow. I brought it here so that you may fell it and use it for your ship." His voice is calm and faintly amused.

"There is not." Dream agrees, "I am glad to give you this chance."

"I have done everything that has been dreamed, Captain Sparrow." Dream says quietly, "I am everything that has been dreamed. I have sailed, and I have been the ocean which is sailed upon."

"Yes, Captain Sparrow." Dream laughs, once - as though startled, "Yes, Captain Sparrow. I do like rum."

Dream nods, and as he walks his robes are replaced with an all-black version of sailor's wear for Jack's time. If you are going to drink, after all, it might as well be done properly. "Lead on, Captain."
